WOODEN SURFBOARDS

This is Tristan in an effort to avoid real work he turned to making wooden surfboards. Why? They are hollow and don’t have any foam making most of the board natural wood. They are light enough to really use them in the surf. We want to make kits and complete boards. Definitely the coolest shop project going.

This is a Paul Jensen design that just got the finish coat of epoxy resin on it’s bottom. Paul came up with this system of making hollow surfboards and his site is www.hollowsurfboards.com
For the internal frame work we used our CNC machine to cut out pieces that are pieced together.
We made the pieces so they easily zip tied together.
This forms the back bone of this board.
The decks are thin layers of wood that are taped on one side and glassed on the other. The first side to be glassed becomes the inside of the board. This picture was another board.
From there you glue the deck to the internal framework then put cork and plywood around the outside.
Then you pull off the tape that was used to hold the wood together while it was glassed from the back underside, now inside.
Then you sand the rails made from the cork and plywood laminations.
The glass is laid on the board ready for resin.
The first glass and resin goes on dry.
The next layer of resin makes a glassy finish. The extra glass gets trimmed.
Now it starts looking like the real thing.
